Is your gym kit secretly sabotaging your workout?
You might blame his lack of progress on motivation, genetics or a mysteriously uncooperative treadmill, but the real culprit could be hanging quietly in his wardrobe. What a person wears to exercise can have a surprisingly large impact on performance, comfort and even injury risk. Experts including sports physiotherapists and apparel specialists, suggest that poor choices in gym clothing can restrict movement, trap heat and generally make exercise feel harder than it needs to be. It turns out that the humble outfit deserves more credit, or blame, than it usually gets.
According to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, clothing that allows full range of motion is essential, particularly for strength training and high intensity workouts. Physiotherapists stress that overly tight or poorly fitted garments can subtly alter movement patterns, which in turn may increase the risk of strain. Meanwhile, breathable fabrics are consistently recommended by sports health experts to help regulate body temperature. Nobody performs at their best while feeling like they are exercising inside a greenhouse.
Footwear, unsurprisingly, gets special attention. Sports clinicians and major athletic brands such as Nike and Adidas, emphasise the importance of choosing shoes suited to the activity. Running shoes are designed for forward motion, while training shoes offer more lateral support. Wearing the wrong type, experts note, can affect stability and increase the likelihood of discomfort or injury. It is a small detail that can make a noticeable difference, even if it lacks the glamour of a new fitness tracker.
There is also a psychological angle that should not be ignored. Studies and commentary from fitness professionals suggest that wearing comfortable and well fitting clothing can improve confidence and encourage consistency. In other words, if you feel good in what you're is wearing, you are more likely to show up and put in the effort.
No one needs a complete wardrobe overhaul, but a few thoughtful choices can remove unnecessary obstacles. After all, exercise is challenging enough without one’s own outfit quietly working against them.
