Could your sugary diet be hurting your memory?

Your brain needs glucose to function, so sugar is not exactly the villain in this story. The problem starts when added sugar becomes a regular guest at every meal.
Research has increasingly explored the relationship between high sugar intake and cognitive performance, with some studies finding associations between sugary drinks, poorer memory and changes involving the hippocampus, the brain region heavily involved in learning and memory.

A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis covering 77 studies found that most observational research linked higher added sugar consumption with a greater risk of cognitive impairment, although the researchers stressed that more work is needed to establish exactly how strong the relationship is. 

One particularly interesting human experiment looked at what happened after just four days of a breakfast high in saturated fat and added sugar. Healthy young adults who ate the Western style breakfast showed reduced performance on hippocampal dependent learning and memory tasks compared with those who ate a healthier breakfast. The researchers also found that larger changes in blood glucose were associated with greater reductions in memory performance.  That does not mean one slice of cake will make you forget your own name, thankfully. It does suggest that repeatedly giving your diet a starring role to sugar and highly processed foods may not be the smartest long-term strategy for keeping your brain operating at its best.

The evidence is not perfectly tidy, and that matters. A meta-analysis of 10 studies in middle aged and older adults found that the overall association between sugar sweetened beverages and cognitive impairment was not statistically significant, even though some individual studies pointed toward higher risks of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.  So, you should not read the research as proof that sugar directly causes memory loss. Think of it more as a growing collection of warning signs. Your overall dietary pattern, blood glucose regulation, physical activity, and metabolic health can all influence brain health, which makes the bigger picture considerably more useful than blaming one ingredient for everything.

If you want a practical place to start, the World Health Organization recommends keeping free sugars below 10 percent of your daily energy intake, with a further reduction to below 5 percent potentially offering additional health benefits.  Dr Francesco Branca, Director of the Department of Nutrition for Health and Development at the World Health Organization, has emphasized reducing free sugar intake as part of healthier eating. 

In everyday terms, you can make that easier by cutting back on sugary drinks and heavily sweetened snacks while choosing foods such as whole fruit, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and other minimally processed options. Your brain may not send you a thank you card, but it has a pretty good memory, so give it something worth remembering.
