Better health starts with small steps.

If you have ever looked at a long list of health goals and thought, “I will start on Monday,” there is some good news. Research from the University of Sydney suggests that you do not need a complete lifestyle overhaul to improve your heart health. In fact, a few extra minutes of sleep, a little more movement, and an extra serving of vegetables each day could make a meaningful difference. It turns out your heart is less interested in dramatic promises and more impressed by consistent effort.

The study, published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, analysed data from the UK Biobank involving more than 502,000 adults aged between 40 and 69. Researchers found that sleeping for just 11 additional minutes per night, adding around 4.5 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity, and eating one extra portion of vegetables each day was linked to a 10 per cent reduction in major cardiovascular events. The strongest results were seen among people who slept between eight and nine hours a night, completed more than 42 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise daily, and maintained a reasonable overall diet quality. This group experienced a 57 per cent lower risk of major cardiovascular events compared with those who had the least healthy lifestyle profile.

Dr Nicholas Koemel, lead author and research fellow at the University of Sydney, says the findings are encouraging because small, combined changes are achievable for most people. He encourages people not to overlook the importance of making a small change or two to their daily routine. That idea is echoed by Dr Heather McKee, a Behaviour Change Expert who worked with the research team. She explains that people often struggle because health advice is designed for ideal circumstances rather than real life. Small improvements, repeated every day, are far more likely to stick than grand plans that disappear somewhere between the gym membership and the biscuit tin.

The takeaway is refreshingly simple. You do not need to become a marathon runner, a gourmet nutritionist, or someone who goes to bed at 8 pm sharp. A few extra minutes of sleep, a short walk, and an extra helping of vegetables can gradually shift the trajectory of your health. It may not sound exciting enough for a movie plot, but your heart probably prefers steady progress over dramatic plot twists anyway.
