A scoop of happiness with a surprising healthy side.

Nothing says summer quite like an ice cream on a warm afternoon, and it turns out your favourite frozen treat might have more going for it than simply cooling you down. While ice cream is still best enjoyed in moderation, researchers are increasingly exploring how it can be made more nutritious by adding ingredients such as probiotics, fibre, extra protein, and fruit. A 2022 review published in Food Research International by Professor Alessandro Genovese and colleagues at the University of Naples Federico II found that ice cream has great potential as a functional food that can combine enjoyment with added health benefits.

Traditional dairy ice cream already provides nutrients including calcium, protein and, in many cases, vitamin D, all of which support healthy bones and muscles. Newer recipes are going a step further by reducing added sugar and saturated fat while boosting nutritional value with beneficial ingredients. That means you can find options that satisfy your sweet tooth while fitting into a balanced diet. Of course, piling on every topping in sight is another story, as research shows the extras can quickly turn a sensible portion into a calorie packed dessert.

There is also the happiness factor, and that is not just wishful thinking on a sunny day. Enjoying a favourite food can activate the brain’s reward system, giving you a temporary lift in mood and helping reduce stress. Experts point out that comfort foods often carry happy memories and feelings of nostalgia, making them even more enjoyable. The key is to savour them mindfully rather than relying on them as your only way to cope with stress. As psychologists and nutrition experts explain, pleasure and healthy eating can happily exist on the same menu.

The takeaway is refreshingly simple. You do not have to ban ice cream to eat well. Choosing quality ingredients, keeping portions sensible and enjoying it as part of an overall balanced diet means you really can have your scoop and eat it too. After all, summer is short, the sunshine never stays forever, and some memories are simply better with a cone in your hand.

For the sake of science, a second scoop may require further investigation!
